California’s First Fully Solar-Powered Apartments

In Poway, California, there’s an affordable new housing complex in which residents simply don’t have to pay electricity bills.

Sounds like a dream come true, right?

Solara is the first apartment complex to be fully powered by the sun. As part of the “Zero Energy New Home” project, the 2.5-acre site boasts homes whose energy needs are fully compensated for by the sun.

As environmental-consciousness grows into a bigger industry, more and more people are willing to shell out the big bucks for green living. Inquiring minds want to know: How much does it actually cost to go green?

It turns out you don’t necessarily have to spend extra for greener living — here in Poway, a family of four with an annual income of $41k or a single person who makes $29k can comfortably rent out these apartments. Beyond simply powering the apartments with energy from the sun, all elements are thought through with the environmental campaign in mind. Public transportation is close by, fluorescent lighting is used, the carpet and decking are made from recycled materials.

Seriously — even the public art within the neighborhood reiterates the sustainability message.

How much exactly does sun-powered living save? The green homes save 11,219 kWh of electricity and 5.538 therms of gas annually. Going green never felt so good… or light on your wallet.
